DAME QUICKLY’S WASH TUB: ENID BLYTON

Standard

Tickle, the pixie was going home. He thought of going to Dame Quickly’s cottage and see what was going on. Dame Quickly often used magic spells. When Tickle arrived at the cottage, he saw nobody was there in the cottage. Suddenly something caught his attention which made his eyes gleam. It was wash-tub, a bright yellow one. Everyone knew about Dame Quickly’s wash-tub. You only had to put in your dirty clothes and say, “Alla malla, wash-tub get to work!” .And the wash-tub would swish the clothes round and round, clean them beautifully, and then wring them out and throw them onto the table. Tickle thought of taking that tub, thinking about the washing he had to do that afternoon. “What a pity”, he said. “I think Dame Quickly has gone to meet her sister as she always does on Monday”. He looked at the wash-tub, then climbed in through the window and picked up the wash-tub.

“I ought to ask but if I wait till tomorrow and ask Dame Quickly, she might say no. I would keep it back before she comes back home tonight”, he said. He ran towards his house poured some warm water into the tub, then added some soap and then put in all his dirty clothes. Then he tapped the tub three times and said the spell. When the tub had swished the clothes round and round in the soapy water, all the dirt was removed. Then it tossed all the clothes to rinse. Tickle took them to rinse in the sink. Just then the tub made some curious noise and suddenly all the curtains flew into the tub. All the washed clothes too flew in to the tub. Tickle too fell in to the tub and was washed again and again.

“NO, don’t do that!” cried Tickle, but the tub won’t listen. At last he went to Dame Quickly and explained the whole situation to her, and apologized for his mistake. Dame Quickly forgave him and with her magic stopped the wash-tub and took it away. Tickle realized his mistake and promised not to take anyone’s belonging without permission.

The book was fun to read, especially the passage where the clothes were flying into the tub all by themselves.
